If You’re Not From Bahrain

Grade 5 is very good with the microphone. They are poised speakers. Can you guess what "taboor" would be in your country?

Grade 5 is very good with the microphone. They are poised speakers. Can you guess what “taboor” would be in your country?

Students in grade 5 wrote poems based on the book If You’re Not From the Prairie, by David Bouchard. Here are several examples that were shared at the 17 October 2016 taboor.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t the sea,
You can’t know the sea.

The sea is very clean,
and we love the sea when the wind is very nice.
We see the sea is very fresh.
Even when you see the sea, you want to swim,
and you can swim in the sea.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t know the sea.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t Dilmun,
You can’t know Dilmun.

In the oldest legends the world had known,
King Gilgamesh of Uruk on a voyage he’d gone,
To search for Paradise through flood and rain,
His boat finally reached the shores of Bahrain.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t know Dilmun.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t saloona,
You can’t know saloona.

Saloona is hot and tastes spicy,
You can eat it with rice most of the days
But in Ramadan, we eat saloona with bread.
Chicken, fish, mutton saloona, and inside
Potato, carrot, okra, zucchini and all the vegetables.
My aunty’s saloona is magical.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t know saloona.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t the beach,
You can’t know the beach.

The sunset by the horizon glimmers and fades away.
The beach is calm, yet it’s filled with people all day.
For that I always want to stay,
Every kid loves to play
While adults rest and lay.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t know the beach.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t our sea
You can’t know our sea.

Our sea is hot and salty,
With beautiful fish and boats
It is salty and can burn our eyes,
We get salt from our sea.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t know the sea.

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t our halwa
You can’t know our halwa.

Halwa is delicious to eat
Halwa is red and sweet
Halwa is nicer than rice and meat
Call your family to chat and eat

If you’re not from Bahrain,
You don’t know our halwa.
