Narrative Storytelling


We have begun a unit on narrative storytelling. One of our anchor statements is:

Students will be able to write narrative stories, both real and imaginary, using sequence of events, and developing setting, characters and motives, conflict, and resolution.

We started out today writing three sentence stories and trying to keep it a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. Of course, we will add more details later, if we choose to. For now, though, I thought some of these #3sentencestory selections from #arsbh were stunning.

  1. Hi Denise – I really love your three sentence stories! What a great idea to get students paraphrasing complex ideas into short sentences. There are also some great writers like Hemingway who deliberately took this minimalist approach.

    “Hemingway’s writing style is sometimes referred to as the Iceberg Theory. The general idea of the Iceberg Theory is that a writer should focus on a minimalist style without explicitly stating the underlying issues or themes. Essentially, the importance of a story lies beneath the surface and cannot be directly seen.”

    I hope your students have fun with the narrative storytelling unit. Maybe they will be our future authors and journalists! Lynne

    The 3 sentence stories are wonderful and must be fun for your students to create. There is something wonderful about miniature tales. Your students create images with just a few words. We also enjoy writing narratives in the micro style.

    My students were overjoyed to read your comment on our blog and I received a resounding YES about blogging together in March. Thank you for the invite, and the link. We are very excited to begin our journey this year.

    We will soon begin the study of traditional tales and each student will create an original tale uses thematic elements found through their research into myths, legends, and folktales. Please feel free to share some of your favorites with us!

      Regarding the sites I use: I think there are too many to list, plus I read books and pick the brains of colleagues in person and virtually. I’m a lifelong learner, always have my eyes and ears opwn to improving.
